Travelling
by car from Chiangmai to Chiang Rai While you are in Chiangmai or planning for a trip by car or by bus to Chiang Rai, the information given here may be useful for scheduling the trip. Trip by car The distance from Chiangmai to Chiang Rai via highway No.118 and No.1 is about 185 kms (115 miles). The travelling time is normally less than 3 hours. Starting from Chiangmai city going north, following the main highway No.118 to Doi Saket (17 kms or 10.6 miles), then to Pong Nam Ron where there is a hot spa. A lot of tourists stop here for fresh local coffee, refreshment, and food. There is a small streamer and hot spa where the water is very hot and we can boil the eggs within 3 minutes. Travelling further from the hot spa to Mae Khachan and still following highway No.118 to Wiang Pa Pao district. Some 9 kms north of Wiang Pa Pao there is a good resort and some more in that area. On the right of the highway there is a big Doi Luang National Park. The trip through the mountains on the winding road is quite pleasant. Still following highway No.118, the next district is Mae Suai, and then Pa Sak where there is a junction which we can take the main divided highway No.1 to Chiang Rai city. Travelling by bus Travelling by local public air-conditioned bus is another economic option. The bus departs Chiangmai for Chiang Rai hourly, and the bus fare is Baht 100. Back to Chiang Rai |
