Transportation
Room (
ราชยานคานหาม) The transportation room contains palanquins, ceremonial chairs with carrying poles and howdahs (elephant chairs) used by royalty and high-ranking officials from the late 19th century to the present. The palanquin with the temple-style roof is the oldest and belonged to the Supreme Patriach. The large, gilded ceremonial palanquin was carried by 16 men and used in coronation and funeral processions of kings. The roofed howdahs were mainly used by princesses and would probably have been curtained. Note the delicately carved ivory howdah (early 20th century), a gift from the Prince of Chiangmai to King Chulalongkorn, Rama V (1868-1910). Map of National Museum |
